As always in Epiphany images, the baby sits on the lap of his mother, who is also seated. In the background is the stable where he was born, with an ass but no ox. The Magi represent the diversity of mankind with respect to age and race. The senior mage offers a box of gold. Behind him the blond mage holds an incense boat and the African king holds a horn containing the myrrh. His armor could be influenced by images of St. Maurice, who was an African soldier.
